Route Description
Route Description for the Amashova National Classic 132km, 106km, 65km and 38km
1. The 132km will start outside the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick
2. Travel on the R103 and left into Prospect Road
3. The cyclists will turn right into Main Road R103
4. Cyclists will turn right at the Shell intersection at Zeederberg Road
5. Cyclists will turn left into R103 Boston Road
6. Cyclists will turn right at Redwoods Farm Stall
7. Cyclists will turn left into Cedara Road
8. Cedara Road then takes a right
9. Cyclists will travel on Cedara Road which becomes Old Howick Road R103
10. A neutral zone begins at Old Howick Road / Dennis Shepstone / Hilton Avenue
11. The first water point will be outside Crossways Hotel
12. Cyclists will travel straight in the neutral zone until they get to the Pietermaritzburg City Hall
13. The 106km will start outside Pietermaritzburg City Hall under the Comrades Gantry
14. Start in Chief Albert Luthuli Street (Commercial Rd) Pietermaritzburg.
15. Turn Right into Alexander Rd.
16. Continue up Fox Hill onto the R103.
17. Turn Left at R56 to Thornville via the R603 to Camperdown.
18. The second water point is situated outside past Gromor.
19. The route continues towards the Umlaas Road intersection.
20. The cyclists will take a hard right turn and ride under the railway bridge.
21. The route will travel alongside the N3 into Camperdown.
22. The cyclists go straight into Doonrug Drive
23. They will travel past the truck stop on Doornrug Drive
24. The 65km Half Challenge will start in Drew Lane outside George Cato Primary School
25. 65km Cyclists will turn left into School Road
26. 132km and 106km cyclists will turn left into Selby Road and come out under the subway. They will turn right at the four way stop when they see Dunbar Spar in front of them.
27. The third water point is outside Eskom.
28. The race continues long the R103 through Harrisons Flats.
29. At R103/ Inchanga/Drummond/1000 Hills the race turns left onto the R103.
30. The route passes the Comrades Marathon Wall of Honour. This is where the fourth Water Point is situated.
31. The route then passes Kearsney College, where the route rapidly begins the decent with a very fast downhill section down Botha’s Hill.
32. The cyclists will carry on straight into Hillcrest on the contraflow side of Old Main Road.
33. Cyclists will turn right into Hospital Road and travel along Hospital road.
34. Cyclists will turn right into Shongweni Road and travel to the M13.
35. Cyclists will travel on the M13 Highway contraflow and will travel to Durban on the Westbound carriageway
36. The 38km Fun Ride will join the cycle race at this point
37. The cyclists continue along the M13, which includes the descent down Fields Hill.
38. The fifth water point is on the M13 in Kloof outside AutoTrak
39. The sixth water point is on the M13 at Westville outside the Westville Mall
40. The route then becomes Jan Smuts Highway.
41. This is followed by a sharp descent, at the bottom of Jan Smuts Highway where cyclists must turn SHARP LEFT to enter the outbound lanes of the Western Freeway N3.
42. They will continue along the N3 and at the crest of the last remaining hill underneath the Tollgate Bridge.
43. The route takes the cyclist down Monty Naicker Road (Pine Street) to a left turn in Walnut Road and straight onto Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR Avenue) southbound. The finish line is in Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR Avenue) southbound under the pedestrian bridge that connects Mustering Fields to People’s Park
44. Cyclists will ride on past Battery Beach Road and turn right onto the boardwalk opposite Moses Mabhida Stadium
45. The final water point will be on the boardwalk before the subway
46. The medal handout will be on the boardwalk after the subway
47. Cyclists will turn right and cycle towards the Suncoast playTsogo Globe where after race hospitality will be held.
